Primm Valley Golf Club, designed by well known golf course architect Tom Fazio, features two award-winning golf courses, the Lakes Course and the Desert Course. The courses have received numerous awards almost since they started taking their first tee times in 1997, including recently, being named one of the “Best Places to Play” by Golf Digest.
The Lakes Course opened in 1997, and in its first year, was quickly named one of the “Top Ten Best New Courses” by Golf Digest. The Lakes Course has numerous pine trees along with several lakes and rivers throughout the course that will make you wonder if you’re still in the desert. The lakes and rivers come into play on 11 of the holes and the course includes generous fairways that slope toward the middle to make the Lakes Course player-friendly. The fairways are a gorgeous, well-manicured rye grass, while the greens are bent grass with challenging undulations. Several strategically placed bunkers line the fairways and guard the greens to challenge golfers at all skill levels. The Lakes Course is just over 6,900 yards and is considered the least demanding of the two courses, however, with the well-placed hazards and tricky greens, a good score will require some of your best and smartest play.
One of the more challenging holes on the Lakes Course is the par-5 530 yard 2nd hole. While not lengthy, the 2nd takes a hard dogleg left around a large lake with large bunkers also lining the left side of the fairway. A well-placed tee shot will be rewarded.
The par-4 18th coming home plays straight and will test your accuracy. Anything right spells trouble, with water coming into play. Bunkers loom on the left. A large bunker guards the green on the short right on this beautiful finishing hole.
The Desert Course, architecturally, is a big change from the lush and green
Lakes Course. The Desert Course was built to showcase the gorgeous desert
landscape that surrounds the course. Highlights of the course are its palm
and mesquite trees, along with colorful cactus and wildflowers. In contrast
to the several lakes and river systems that flow through the Lakes Course,
the Desert Course has vast stretches of waste bunkers that line the fairways
on several holes. The Desert Course isn’t completely without water,
with the wet stuff coming into play on five holes. Fairways are narrow and
have several elevation changes and large, receptive greens with bunkers guarding
them will challenge all golfers who play the course.
The Desert Course shows its teeth almost from the start, with the par-4 2nd
hole being the rated the most difficult on the course. Measuring 435 yards,
the hole requires a precise tee shot to avoid the bunkers to the left and
right, then avoiding water on the left side of the green. The green pushes
doglegs left toward the water, so the “wet stuff” can easily
come into play.
On 13, the landing area for your tee shot is generous, however the farther down the fairway you get, strategy comes more and more into play. With an undulating fairway and strategic bunkers surrounding the green, the par-5 is a stern test.
