The Chase is the latest addition to the spectacular golf courses that dot the Las Vegas area, winding its way through the Coyote Springs community. This Jack Nicklaus designed course is the first new course to open in the Las Vegas area in 6 years, and is a challenging 7,471 yard, par-72 masterpiece. The Chase is the first in a series of Nicklaus designed courses that will wind its way through the community. Coming in 2009, the first phase of an all-encompassing PGA Village, only the second of its kind in the world, is anticipated to open to the public. Also, plans have been made for a Jack Nicklaus and Pete Dye co-designed course to break ground in 2010.

The Chase at Coyote Springs is considered one of Nicklaus’ best desert designs yet. The course has lush rye grass fairways and 11 lakes that come into play throughout the course, including one with a massive five-tier waterfall, and are set against a dramatic desert backdrop with mountain views surrounding the course. White sand bunkers guard the greens and mild undulations throughout the course will challenge your short game and accuracy. As you approach the hole, tricky breaks and undulations will greet you. Fairways, tees and rough are grassed in common rye grass, while greens are bent grass. The fairways feature generous landing areas, however, bunkers and desert terrain are strategically placed to have the golfer think and make decisions off the tee. In many instances, the conservative play can lead to par, with some golfers wishing to push their chips “all in” and gamble with an aggressive shot off the tee. Your visit will only be enhanced by the club’s mandatory forecaddie program, which helps to offer each golfer the information and strategy to produce an enjoyable round.

If it’s a challenge you want, it’s a challenge you’ll get soon out of the gates at The Chase on the par-5 575 yard 2nd hole. The fairway is undulating and thirteen bunkers are well placed on this lengthy uphill hole. Avoiding the bunkers is only the beginning of golfer’s concerns, as a large lake guards the right side of the green for the approach. Most players will be happy with a par on this “bear” of a hole.

The par-4 9th hole rewards good shotmaking. Measuring 439 Yards, well-placed bunkers guard the left side of the fairway. Tee shots dead center and to the right side will most likely find the fairway. The green is large, however anything left will find the large bunker and even further left, could find water. Accuracy and good strategy will lead to a good score.

The 18th hole is as picturesque as you’ll find. The fairway is generous and leaves you a mid-iron on the approach. The danger comes with anything hit to the right. A large lake guards the entire right side of the fairway and green. The green is narrow and deep, with bunkers guarding the left side. Accuracy is at its most important on the approach shot on this rewarding final par-4.

PGA Golf Club Coyote Springs will be part of the larger, soon-to-be-built PGA Village at Coyote Springs -- a mix of golf-themed retail, instruction and hospitality venues and the western home for PGA of America Professionals. The Chase operates out of a temporary golf shop until the permanent 12,000 square-foot clubhouse is completed, anticipated in the fall of 2009. Once completed, the PGA Village at Coyote Springs will feature a PGA Club clubhouse with restaurant and bar, private locker rooms, PGA Golf Shop, meeting facilities and event courtyard. The 20-acre practice facility has been completed, with 100,000 square feet of tees and 13 target greens.

The plans for Phase II of PGA Golf Club Coyote Springs is to include a PGA Learning Center Tee Area, short game practice area, and a PGA Exhibition Amphitheater which will be perfect for golf school programs and demonstrations.

The Chase has already received numerous accolades in its short time since opening. Already, the golf course has been named “#2 Best New Courses” by Golf Digest, ranked #3 in the “Top 10 Best New Courses You Can Play” by Golf Magazine, and “Top 10 New Courses In The World” by Travel and Leisure Golf. As you can see, The Chase is already building a reputation quickly as one of the best, not only in the area, but in the country.

The Chase at Coyote Springs is just less than one hour away from the Las Vegas Strip. Take the time to take the easy drive to Coyote Springs to play Nicklaus’ latest gem and to see the beginning stages of the PGA’s newest oasis in the desert.
