All of the Walters golf courses offer a unique opportunity to play a course different from all others in this entertainment capital. Desert Pines Golf Club is certainly no different. Desert Pines is located within a short 20 minute drive of the Las Vegas Strip and offers a trip to the Carolinas with its 4,000 mature trees, white sand bunkers, and large bent grass greens. Water comes into play on 9 of the 18 holes and tends to reward strong course management skills over power off the tees. Keeping the ball in play is the key to a good score at Desert Pines.

Desert Pines is one of the ultimate risk/reward courses in the Las Vegas area. Accuracy is essential with the fairways well lined with thousands of trees. A golfer will most likely use every club in his bag during his experience at Desert Pines and provides players of all ability levels a fun, challenging, and enjoyable experience.

The golf course shapes up as a strategic, thought provoking course that demands accuracy. There are challenges all through the course and on every hole. One of the first holes that tests golfers’ shotmaking is the par-4 5th hole. An accurate tee shot is the key as the fairway narrows about 250 yards out. A lake guards the right side and one of many strategically placed bunkers guards the left. If you can navigate the tee shot, it gives you a clear shot into the slightly elevated green. Club selection is important in scoring well on this hole.

The par-4 9th hole measures 467 yards and offers a large lake guarding the right side. Bunkers find their way on the left, but the real challenge is getting home to the green. Water guards the right side of the green and gives no room for error. A large ridge runs through the center of the green, giving you large breaks once you hit the “dance floor”.

The final three holes will give golfers all the challenge they need as they finish and try to complete their round. The 16th hole is a par-3 measuring to 252 yards. This is Desert Pines’ signature hole and is not only long, but requires accuracy to avoid the large bunkers guarding the short left for those trying to run their tee shots up to the green, as well as bunkers to the right and back left. The green features a false front and several undulations. After the challenging 16th, the par-4 17th hole lurks. Measuring 428 yards, this slight dogleg right requires a straight tee shot. However, the real cause for concern lies in the approach, with the green having a false front, and sloping toward the back. The entire back of the green and left side are protected by water. Any errant shot means certain bogey. As you finish your round, the course doesn’t take a break, requiring your game’s best on the 18th. Another par-4, this time with a lake guarding the entire left side of the fairway and green. Two very large bunkers surround the green that undulates, typical of a Dye design.

The Desert Pines clubhouse offers the latest in Callaway club rentals and Footjoy shoes for those that don’t choose to travel with their golf clubs and equipment. Also guests will find a fully stocked clubhouse and pro shop with the latest in brand name golf equipment and apparel.
Duffers Bar and Grill is open for business for breakfast and lunch and offers a wide selection of menu items. This tends to be a popular lunchtime spot for local business members, lawyers, and the occasional politician. Duffers is also a great location for having a cocktail or drink following your round with excellent views of the golf course.

The Desert Pines Practice Center is the only two-tiered, climate controlled facility in the area and features an automatic ball delivery system. The Center is climate controlled for a cooler experience in the heat of the summer, and heating for a warmer time in the winter months. The Practice Center also has lights for golfers who want to work on their golf game into the evening hours – staying open until 10:30pm in the winter months and until 11:00pm in the summer. In addition, there are also two teaching bays for personal instruction from one of the PGA Master instructors on the site.

Desert Pines Golf Club has continued to receive recognition as one of the best new courses in the area from a variety of publications since its opening in 1997. The course challenges players of all skill levels and demands some of golfers’ best shotmaking skills. Make the effort to visit this beautiful course on your next trip to Las Vegas.
